The current Wrangler has been on the market for quite some time and it is expected to be fully replaced by an all new model in the next year. Unlike the previous version of the car, it seems that this new model is also going to spawn a pickup truck model which will return the Gladiator name on the market after more than two decades. The upcoming 2017 Jeep Gladiator will be based on a stretched version of the Wrangler platform and it will get a lot of goodies to make from it a real competitor on the North American truck market.
2017 Jeep Gladiator Exterior
Just like with the upcoming Wrangler, the new Gladiator is going to be using an aluminum body which will not only drop its weight considerably, but it should also make for a more efficient truck altogether. There are no words on the official release date but it seems that Jeep will release the truck at the end of 2016 while the market availability will start with the first half of 2017. Pricing wise, the Gladiator is likely to start around $20,000 while its premium models will likely go over $50,000. This falls perfectly in line with all the other compact trucks out there and considering that the Gladiator will have a unique design, we have great expectations for it.
The design of the 2017 Jeep Gladiator is going to be based on that of the upcoming Wrangler but the truck will also borrow cues from both the 2005 concept truck as well as from the original Gladiator. This could mean that it will get an almost identical front end to the Wrangler but most other features will be different. Expect different wheels, a new design for the rear end with an all new bed design and even a couple of off-road dedicated models with chunky tires and lockable differentials.
Interior of the new Jeep Gladiator
Inside the cabin on the other hand the truck is going to be a bit more minimalistic. Here we only expect it to get the basic necessities which will allow it to be a great compact truck. However, the top end models will likely get leather upholstery, sport seats, climate control and even satellite navigation.
There are still no words on whether the truck will get a five seats version but considering the first and second generations of the Gladiator we would be inclined to think that it will only be offered as either a two or four seats version.
2017 Jeep Gladiator Engine
Engine wise, the 2017 Jeep Gladiator is expected to be released with a single engine choice while more are going to be added at a later date. This engine is going to be a 2.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 diesel which has already been offered in Europe for the past years. In the US truck it will provide around 170 horsepower and over 320 lb-ft of torque which should be enough to offer it decent performance on the road and great off-road usability thanks to the massive amount of torque available from really low down the rev range. A 6 speed manual and rear wheel drive are likely going to be offered as standard but an 8 speed automatic and four wheel drive will be available as well.
Later down the road the upcoming Gladiator is also going to get at least a petrol engine. This is expected to be the same unit which will first debut on the new Wrangler. The actual specifications of it are currently unknown but it may just be a 3 liter twin-turbo V6 with more than 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque which would keep fuel consumption down thanks to the low weight of the pickup truck and it would also allow it to compete with ease with the more powerful compact trucks out there.
