While currently Jeep is not making any pickup trucks, they did build nearly two decades ago a couple of different models intended for different people which even though they were not all that successful, they started to be loved by people throughout the years so there are now a lot of them who wish Jeep made another pickup. Well, it seems that this may be closer than we first thought because not too long ago rumors started to surface about the 2016 Jeep Gladiator, a pickup truck based on the upcoming generation of the Wrangler.
2016 Jeep Gladiator Design
This is supposed to be based on a body on frame type of construction which would allow Jeep’s engineers to develop a highly usable off-road pickup truck. Unfortunately there aren’t any real official details available about this new truck but it seems that it will be using the same platform as the long wheelbase model of the Wrangler. On top of that, it will share a lot of design similarities with it, except in the back where the Gladiator should receive a lot of updates over its sibling.
Jeep Gladiator 2016 Engine
In terms of engines, the 2016 Jeep Gladiator will very likely be available with a single engine choice at launch and only later down the road it will receive a couple more engines. The base will be powered by a 2.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 diesel unit which has been offered in the European Wrangler for a long time now. This will be making around 170 horsepower and over 320 lb-ft of torque and it should be enough for most people’s needs. Early rumors suggest that the truck will be able to get over 30 MPG on the highway and as much as 24 MPG in the city which would quickly become a best in its class.
The model will be available with a 6 speed manual and rear wheel drive in its stock form but an 8 speed automatic as well as a four wheel drive model are also going to be made available at launch. The only drawback of this powertrain is that while it does offer a great fuel efficiency, it may be proven to be just too slow for US highways.
Exterior of the new Jeep Gladiator
The exterior design of this upcoming model is going to be reminiscent of the 2005 concept truck and of the upcoming Wrangler. We are positive that in the front, the two models will be identical with the same grille, headlights and even bumper.
However, the wheels on the pickup truck will be different while the rear end will receive a new design which is still going to be boxy in appearance in order to fit the design scheme on the Wrangler. The underside of the car will likely get a new suspension system in the back in order to handle the extra load and it may even get a standard rear lockable differential.
2016 Gladiator Interior
The interior of the 2016 Jeep Gladiator on the other hand will be on the lesser side so don’t expect the same interior trimmings and quality as that found in the Wrangler.
The truck will be aimed at small companies and professionals, so it will get the most basic features in its base form, dirt resistant upholstery as well as rubber floor mats. The upper end models on the other hand will be a bit better equipped but expect the same type of rough design as on the base versions.
2016 Jeep Gladiator Price and Release Date
The release date has been set for the end of 2016 but the production model will likely come some time after that. The price should be around $20,000 for a base model and more than $50,000 for a top end version with all the off-road bits ticked in.
