2015 McLaren 650S Review

When it was launched, the 12C has been praised by most people but some reports suggested that it wasn’t one of the most thrilling rides to have due to its serious approach to the super-car. However, the 2015 McLaren 650S promises to take all that and throw it away for one of the most fun rides anyone can have. It is based on the same chassis as the 12C, meaning it is a carbon-fiber tube that not only it is one of the toughest chassis in the World but it is also one of the lightest as well. The 650S uses a very similar suspension system to that of the 12C but this time it can be tuned to the driver’s necessities.

Most changes of the 2015 McLaren 650S over the original 12C are cosmetic but there are also a few technical changes as well. The most notable one is that the engine is now more powerful as well as more fuel efficient than before. It is the same 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 which has been developed with the help of Yamaha. Just as the name suggests, it is capable of 650 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque which is enough to get the car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 3 seconds, being one of the fastest car in the World as far as the acceleration goes. The 0 to 120 MPH time is also very low, at just under 8.5 seconds while the maximum top speed of 211 MPH make it just as fast as some of the most expensive cars in the World.

However, the best part is not the engine but the gearbox and the running gear which can be called engineering marvels. The gearbox is a 7 speed dual-clutch unit which can change gears in under 50 ms making it fast enough that there is no real power drop to the wheels making it feel like a continuous surge of power. The gearbox sends all of its power to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential which can be electronically controlled to alter its behavior.

All of these sit on one of the best chassis that feature a unique suspension system. While a normal car uses connecting rods and anti-roll bars to connect the suspension of each wheels, the 2015 McLaren 650S uses a computer and adjustable dampers and spring so there is no physical connection between the wheels of the car. This not only makes it very comfortable but also this system makes the car stick to the road because all the wheels are flat on the ground at all times unlike in a conventional car.

The design of the 2015 McLaren 650S is probably the biggest change over that of the 12C. The S model take a different approach with a lot more design elements from the P1, with a bigger front grille, P1 style headlights as well as a rear diffuser which is identical to that of the more expensive P1. The only thing which resembles the 12C is the rear spoiler which remained mostly unchanged.

2015 McLaren 650S

On the interior , 2015 McLaren 650S features all the commodities you would want in a super-car such as climate control, satellite navigation, Alcantara or leather upholstery and a multifunctional steering wheel which offers most of the car’s functions. Its only drawback is the satellite navigation which is quite bad and even though it does have great satellite signal, it can’t keep up with the speed of the 650S.
